8:00am to 5:30 pm

Abstract / Description:

The course is designed to educate occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants on the use of the following Physical Agent Modalities, electro-stimulation, and therapeutic ultrasound. During this course, the latest evidenced-based research will be discussed, and the use of electro-stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound. An in-depth explanation of the physiological responses of the body of each modality will be presented. The physiological effects, indications, precautions, and contraindications will be discussed to treat patients safely and adequately. This course will also discuss the most effective and safe parameters, intensity, and how to correctly document treatment will be emphasized. This course will prepare students and practitioners on the theory and clinical application of therapeutic ultrasound, electro-stimulation (transcutaneous electrical stimulation, neuromuscular stimulation, functional electrical stimulation).

Objective(s):
•Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Describe within the state of Florida the requirements, criteria, and responsibilities for PAMs certification

•Explain the biophysical principles and biological effects of sound waves and electricity in using ultrasound and electrical stimulation

•Discuss the principles of current flow, impedance, and the application of electrotherapy to Ohm’s law

•Recognize and apply safe electrotherapy and ultrasound treatments for patients

•Discuss how to document the use of electrotherapy and ultrasound treatments properly

•Describe the elements of the pain pathway and the differences between acute and chronic pain

•Provide the physiological responses of the body, indications, precautions, and contraindications, related to the application of ultrasound, and electrical stimulations (NMES, FES, TENS)

•Select appropriate parameters with ultrasound and electrical stimulation to treat specification conditions safely and effectively.

•Determine the correct dose and application of electrical stimulation based on the stages of healing.

•Discuss the differences between thermal and non-thermal responses using ultrasound and the latest evidence-based research.

•Safely administer electrotherapy treatments to alleviate pain, reduce muscle spasms, and improve muscle performance.

•Participants will be given case studies during the session, and they will be able to properly adjust parameters, dosing, and application of electrical stimulation and ultrasound.
